What if I told you that you don't have to? As long as you WANT to change and trust the process, that is enough!
Hypnotherapy is just the process (a natural process) in which you learn how to focus your thoughts inwardly. Just like with a daydream or meditation - you are aware of whats going on around you but are more focused and interested in what is going on in your mind. Hypnotherapy utiizes that ability to help shift beliefs that live in your subconscious. More about the subconscious below...
Hypnosis is the experience of being aware of your physical and mental relaxation. Recall the last time you were aware that you were in that in-between state of awake and sleep - it's similar to that. Oddly enough, as relaxed as you know you are in hypnosis, you often find your mind active and you are hyper aware. You'll be aware of every sound in the room, and you are able to remember everything perfectly.
Can you focus? Do you want to change more than you want to stay where you are? Do you want it to work? Then you're hypnotizable. I'm not kidding. That's all it takes.
You've been watching stage hypnosis, huh? Well, I suppose if you WANT to quack like a duck, you could but that's not what hypnotherapy is for. We focus on growth and change - not stage entertainment. The next time you watch a stage hypnotist pay clsoe attention to the people they choose to come up on stage. They're usualy the eager class clown types that enjoy making others laugh at their own expense. They CHOOSE to be up there and they choose to follow the hypotists suggestions. They'll never pick a wallflower who is afraid to be on stage beacuse that person wouldn't follow their suggestions and would ruin the show.
Have you ever gotten stuck in a daydream or meditating? Have you ever been lost in thought or wrapped up in a good book and were forced to continue? Probably not. What you are doing in the altered state is the same - except you're choosing to focus on healing topics.
Can someone force you into meditation or a daydream? Can someone force you to fall asleep? No? Well, then someone can't force you into hypnosis. If people could be hypnotized against their will, it would be the most closely guarded secret in human history.
An easier question would be - what ISN'T the subconscious mind? Our subconscious is our memory bank, it manages all of our involuntary body processes, it shapes and holds our beliefs, emotions, and it is what makes us who we are. It is what is creating your reality and with hypnosis - you have the power to rebuild your reality by learing how to tap into this part of who you are.
Do you lose control when you daydream or meditate? Hypnosis is the same thing. So if you don't lose control in those situations, you won't lose control in hypnosis. All my clients will learn self-hypnosis (aka mediation) because I believe it's important to give the client tools they can use themselves to better their state.
